We note with some concern that Bush is becoming loose-lipped about his plans to hold on to the presidency after 2008. Of course the audience laughed when he said he was planning to stay in power. Ha ha ha. I think the press corps was laughing nervously. I think they are starting to realize he’s serious.
A Wired Magazine blog, Threat Level, has a cute little piece that doesn’t take the threat seriously at all. Having some access to insiders through our author Don Simon, we can’t afford to be so glib. Those inside the White House with any sense of morality or patriotism left are said to be disturbed beyond belief, in shock, and unsure what to do about it.
Meanwhile, get ready to be sold on the idea; the Bush-Cheney marketing machine makes Apple look like Microsoft. You’ll think it’s a good idea. You’ll think he had no choice. FDR did it. He’ll step down when the country is ready.
Look for the announcement before next summer.
UPDATE: someone pointed out that this presidential directive kinda telegraphs the punch, too.

“…bush is planning a permanent presidency…” what a load of crap. A single line “…I was planning that too…” in response to a question of Putin staying on as Prime Minister. Agent Zero and his “inside sources” perceive this as the beginning of a dictatorship. Could you be more stupid? I doubt it. How do you think that would happen? Do you think the American people would just roll over? Uneducated, minimum wage morons with access to the internet, unbelievable.

I’m glad to see this provoked such a strong response from you. Do I think this one quote automatically means he’s going to try for a quiet coup-detat? No, not in itself. But since White House insiders are already leaking his plans to “temporarily” suspend elections, it is not moronic to take Bush’s “jokes” seriously.

Do I think the American people will just roll over? Sure, if the coup is sold the right way. Just like we rolled over for Iraq, for instance. Have you noticed that the (marketing) spin has changed over the years? We’re there because Saddam did 9/11. Then we’re there because of WMDs. Then we’re there because Saddam was a bad guy. Then we’re there to secure peace in the mid-east. Then we’re there so we don’t have to fight them here. (WTF??) Now we’re there to “support” the Iraq government (which has already asked us to leave).
You’re seeing messages being test-marketed. The same thing is being done with Iran right now.
We rolled over as Bush erased habeas corpus. He authorizes torture. He openly plans to nuke Iran, starting a war without sanction from Congress. We roll over. Bush spies on Americans — even before 9/11! — and we roll over.
What makes you think we won’t roll over when he says we have to “wait” for elections until a “crisis” is over?
