Entire Genome of One Species Discovered Inside Another’s

Wired reports that researchers examining the DNA of fruitflies have discovered that what at first appeared to be contamination by the Wolbachia parasite is instead a complete absorption of the genome–”the most dramatic example yet of lateral tranfer, in which genes pass between unrelated species.”
The ramifications for species evolution are great. Maybe it wasn’t Grays but little microbes from Orion seeding the cosmic soup…
