Turns out that the ol’ Peruvian meteorite was in fact a meteorite (a chondrite, to be exact). Test results showed that the crater contained “telltale magnetic fragments” consistent with meteorite crashes.
Also turns out that there were indeed an indeterminate number of people sickened by what likely may have been arsenic and sulphur fumes that were produced by the earth in the crater being superheated at the time of impact. The arsenic in the ground water, a known issue in the area, may have been vaporized and have sickened investigators and locals.
So what of Jorge Tejada López and the “mass hysteria”? You can find him contradicting himself all over the place, and the government has still not issued any “official” conclusions. They are, however, planning to market the area as a tourist attraction.
