This story came in just in time for us to share it with you today. We are thankful to Robert M. for sharing it with us, and to you our readers. Happy Thanksgiving!

“Gran used to cook us all a big turkey dinner at her house every Thanksgiving, but she also used to put a ham in the double-oven. Gramp hated turkey, so the Virginia Ham was always for him. She’d be in the kitchen glazing the thing at ten in the morning with Coke syrup and decorating it with pineapples and cherries. It always seemed kind of silly to me as a kid. My parents used to make me eat all kinds of things I didn’t like, so I didn’t understand why Gran let him get away with not eating turkey like the rest of us. :)

This one year, though, Gran was in a panic when we got to her house. She lived just across town, so we always went early to watch the Macy’s parade and Mom would help in the kitchen. I think I was about eight years old and I had never seen Gran upset before. She was almost crying. She told Mom that the ham had “gone missing.” Those were her words. My mom thought she was bonkers. I mean, how could you lose a ham? But Gran was very serious and insisted that she had seen it in the refrigerator the night before and this morning it was gone.

We kids all kind of rolled our eyes and went to watch TV. Even with the parade as a distraction, though, we could hear the adults chattering in the kitchen. Gramp was loud insisting “the old bat lost it” and I didn’t know if he meant the ham or her mind.

Later that day, when we were eating dinner, Gramp had to have turkey with the rest of us. Oh how he moaned. He was like a little girl. Gran left the table and went to her room she was so upset. Mom went after her and Dad asked me to help clear plates. In the commotion, I snuck off to listen at the door. I heard my Gran tell Mom that she had heard strange footsteps in the house the night before but Gramp told her she was crazy and let it alone. In the middle of the night, she went to use the bathroom and saw a “person made of shadows” heading towards the kitchen. She was so terrified that she hurried back to the bedroom to wake Gramp but he was sound asleep and snoring like a log. Gran told Mom that she was convinced that the shadow person stole the ham in the middle of the night.

I couldn’t believe my ears. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, it was so scary and funny at the same time. My Mom just comforted Gran. When I asked Mom about it later, she just shushed me and told me that I shouldn’t have been listening outside of doors.

We never did find out what happened to that ham, but Gran only served turkey every Thanksgiving after that.”
