The buzz about honeybees disappearing all over the US may not be unfounded, but it may be somewhat less mysterious. Scientists now believe that IAPV (Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus) may be behind the “colony collapse” phenomenon.
The disappearance has not only been creepy, but has also been a source of concern for everyone from home gardeners to commercial farming operations that rely on the bees for crop pollination. Researchers caution that IAPV may not be the sole cause and, furthermore, it’s unlikely a vaccine or other preventative measure (let alone cure) will be forthcoming.
Conspiracy theories continue to flourish around this phenomenon, including blame for electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones or the impact of genetically modified crops. Chemical pesticides are still under investigation.
