Folks, if I haven’t said it here before, I’m saying it right now: most conspiracies hide in plain sight.

And the head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and certified buttmunch, Michael Chertoff is giving us a good example. As Reason Magazine rightly points out, the real terrorists are the ones spreading terror. That’s not Al Qaeda, people. They haven’t been able to instill any real terror for years now. Glasgow made us all snicker.

But a statement like this from the guy who’s supposed to be keeping you safe — this will create terror, a quiet, deep-running current of terror, just the way the U.S. government likes it:

On Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told the editorial board of The Chicago Tribune that he had a “gut feeling” about a new period of increased risk.

He based his assessment on earlier patterns of terrorists in Europe and intelligence he would not disclose.

“Summertime seems to be appealing to them,” Chertoff said in his discussion with the newspaper about terrorists. “We worry that they are rebuilding their activities.”

What a bunch of bullshit. Intel is not about gut feelings. It’s science, straight up. I know, I used to do it for a living. What Michael Jackoff here is saying is “be afraid, be very afraid, I won’t tell you why, but be very afraid.” Next he’ll be suggesting we all buy gas masks (from a Halliburton subsidiary) or put some Texaco duct tape and plastic over our windows.

I would like to humbly suggest that we all take a cue from the very good movie Network (see it now if you haven’t already), open our windows wide, and yell, “I am not afraid, and I’m not going to take it anymore!”

If you want to add something in a “fuck you, Chertoff”, I won’t be offended at all. Simon out.
