Have you ever had the feeling that you’ve lived before? Had a strong feeling, even? Rich, from Irvine, CA, had even more than that. He apparently has had a recollection:
“Hi guys. I’m not sure how exciting this story is, but I was just telling my girlfriend about it and she got kinda freaked out. So I thought I’d send it in to you.
“When I was like about seven years old, I was sound asleep one morning when I suddenly sat up in bed and said something that sounded like it was in a foreign language. My mom was in my bedroom at the time, and she thought it was really strange and wrote it down. I still have the note. I woke up right after that, but I didn’t remember saying anything. I was having a dream, though, and I remember a little of what it was about.
“Anyway, what I said sounded like:
imm-per-ahh-tour ahh-vay-hoo
.. that’s pretty much what my mom wrote down. Weird, huh?
“Well, what’s even weirder is what it probably means. But let me tell you about what I remember dreaming! I remember that I was watching a parade. There were thousands of people; I remember that part really clearly. Hundreds of people marching down the street, and thousands watching. There were all these colors, a lot of gold and a lot of green. Soldiers were there, all dressed up, on guard. And I can remember that there were animals there in the parade. Tigers, I think, and maybe some others.
“That’s most of what I remember in the dream. So not too long ago, I tried to figure out what language I might have been speaking:
imm-per-ahh-tour ahh-vay-hoo
“I went over to the Language Studies department at the university, which is right in the same town where I’m now living. I had to explain why I was there about four times before they let me see the right guy, an ancient languages guy. I told him that he was gonna think I was crazy, but could he help me figure out what I had been saying.
“He took me seriously enough to take a long look at that phrase:
imm-per-ahh-tour ahh-vay-hoo
“… and then he goes and grabs a couple of old books, the kind whose bindings are practically falling apart. After a minute, he sticks his finger in one to hold his place and then starts paging through the other, like he was kind of excited.
“Then he got a pen and wrote this down:
imperator adveho
“and he told me that it’s Latin for ‘the emperor is coming’. He said no one knows for 100% sure how street-Latin was pronounced, but that what my mom had written down looked about right.
“He said, ‘I don’t know where you got this, but if you think it’s from a past life, that’s as good an explanation as any.’
“Which kind of freaked me out, because I know I had sort of thought that before, but hearing it put that way was startling.
“The thing about the dream that I didn’t mention before is that I’m pretty sure I can remember that the buildings on the street had huge marble columns. You know, like in ancient Rome.”
