National Geographic News reports that some of the first “noctilucent clouds” of the year appeared over Budapest, Hungary on June 15. Occurring most often around the summer solstice, night-shining clouds are the highest in the Earth’s atmosphere at 85-100km and can be visible at polar latitudes, though the range has moved as far south as the western United States. The phenomenon is not well-understood by scientists but is currently under investigation by NASA. The principal researcher warns that the clouds could be a visible manifestation of atmospheric change due to global climate shift.
The noctilucent cloud phenomena was first reported in 1885 following the eruption of Krakatoa. Varying theories have been put forth about the catalyst for the clouds, ranging from volcanic dust and ash to particulate debris from the destruction of man-made spacecraft. Most recently, scientists with the Mars Express mission found clouds of carbon dioxide similar to noctilucent clouds in the Mars atmosphere.
Could climate change bring about a barren, Mars-like Earth? Or could “space debris” really be some form of cosmic chem trail seeding these otherwordly, glowing space clouds? I leave it to your imagination.
