“Dear Agent Zero -
“I don’t know if this counts as “paranormal” per se, but I had a decidedly strange incident that I wanted to share with your readership. I am a university professor in the sciences and am not particularly prone to flights of fancy. I mention this because the story I am about to relate stretches believability to a tenuous thread.
“I was driving home from campus in the late afternoon to beat rush-hour traffic, going about 75 mph on the highway. I was in the right lane, coming up on a merge to exit onto an intersecting highway. Another driver cut in and I had to act extraordinarily quickly to avoid rear-ending him at that speed. In a flash, I felt myself slam forward into a horrific crush of metal and plastic without even time for a last breath.
“Obviously, it didn’t happen. Otherwise, I would have to be writing to you from the beyond, which I can assure you that I am not. Instead, I found myself somehow ahead of the driver that cut into me. Now there is absolutely no way that I could have swerved into the left lane and then somehow accelerated around the incoming car and back into the right lane. Considering that the shoulder is almost non-existent heading into the ramp, I couldn’t have performed the maneuver on the right side either.
“I have no explanation as to how I switched positions with the driver who was cutting me off, let alone explain what I can only describe as a full-body experience of being killed in a crush of metal. What I can tell you is my theory: I believe that I jumped from one “string” to another, essentially entering a parallel universe.
“Sound strange? Perhaps. But time and again I’ve had the feeling that life is kind of like a choose-your-own-adventure book. Imagine that the Universe, in its infinite plurality, contains every possible eventuality. You crash the car, you swerve, you weren’t even on the highway because you stayed late or overslept or…you get the idea. Is it so crazy to think that, once in a great while, those possibilities collide, maybe even with the retention of some palimpsest of consciousness? I think not. I think so. Yes.”
