Codename Sheba

Revealed: a claimant to the legend of the mysterious, black-clad figure who leaves three roses and a bottle of fine cognac at the gravesite of Edgar Allan Poe on the anniversary of his death. 92-year-old Sam Porpora, former ad man and church congregant, claims that he invented the legend as an effort to promote the site in an attempt to save it from dereliction.

But has the graveyard mystery indeed been laid to rest? Porpora claimed to have reported the visitor to Baltimore local news in 1967, but the earliest news clipping dates to 1950 and other old-timers remembered the legend having been passed around for decades. Regardless of origin, the vigil continues each January 19th.
